Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Toor Dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 tablespoon Gujarati Dal Masala Powder
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 2-3 curry leaves
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1 small green chili, slit
  • 1 teaspoon jaggery or sugar
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Steps to cook Gujarati Dal Masala at Home:

  1. Cook the Dal:

 Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and cook it in a pressure cooker with enough water until soft and mushy. Set aside.

  1. Prepare the Tempering

Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle. Then add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.

  1. Add the Masala:

Add chopped tomatoes and green chili to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes soften. Then, sprinkle in the Gujarati Dal Masala Powder and sauté for a minute.

  1. Combine and Simmer
